The practice of simulation-based learning now appears in dysphagia training because it enables healthcare professionals to practice their skills through controlled sessions which help them build their abilities while maintaining patient safety. Simulation provides essential value to competency-based training because traditional placement sites do not guarantee consistent availability of complex swallowing cases. Research findings show that participants who take part in simulated learning activities develop their diagnostic reasoning abilities and their assessment skills and their confidence levels and their communication abilities. The advantages of this technology have been documented in studies which used it for pediatric feeding, adult dysphagia assessment and treatments. The simulation environment enables students to receive directed feedback which enables them to develop their skills through multiple attempts before they interact with actual patients. Through simulation students can develop their clinical judgment while connecting theoretical knowledge to practical applications.
