Öğe Translation-Focused Technological Competence: Bridging Tradition and Innovation(Sivas Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi, 2025) Vural, HaldunTranslation has become a multidisciplinary profession which is influenced by technological advances rather than being a traditional linguistic discipline. Translators have long acted as intermediaries between languages and cultures, facilitating communication across boundaries. The field of translation studies has broadened in the contemporary age, including theories from other fields and adjusting to technological advancements that are changing the nature of translation both in practice and education. The idea of translation-focused technological competency is examined in this study, with an emphasis on how technology improves the productivity, accuracy, and efficiency of translators. Instant information sharing via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and other platforms has been made possible by the emergence of digital media and Web 2.0 technologies, which have completely changed communication. By providing interactive communication and translation solutions via software, mobile applications, and smart devices, these innovations have also revolutionized translation methods. Machine translation enabled by artificial intelligence lacks emotional intelligence and nuanced comprehension required for precise interpretation of complicated texts. Therefore, human translators are still essential, even if technology helps to increase accessibility and decrease workload. Consequently, human translators are moving into positions that concentrate on correcting and improving translations produced by machines. This change emphasizes how crucial it is for translators to be technologically proficient since it enables them to use digital tools efficiently without sacrificing the quality and authenticity of their translations. Translators may improve their performance, ensure accuracy, and satisfy the needs of a globalized society by being proficient with technology tools and being aware of their limitations. This paper positions translators as crucial mediators in the digital era by highlighting the necessity of ongoing adaptation and skill improvement in translation methods. In the end, the human element is still essential to producing translations that are suitable for the target culture and setting.Öğe Exploring Posturbanism in Annalee Newitz's The Terraformers(Bucharest Review, 2024) Bay, HaticeAbstract: Annalee Newitz’s The Terraformers (2023) explores the endeavors of the Environmental Rescue Team (ERT), which consists of diverse humans, uplifted animals, engineered organisms, bots, drones, and AI, and how they strive to construct a sustainable planet, Sask-E, and cities amid Verdance – a Capitalocenic corporate power that shapes the dynamics between humans, nature, and life. Drawing on the concept of the Capitalocene and Donna Haraway’s theories of the Chthulucene, sympoiesis, making kin, and staying with the trouble, this article discusses the significance of multispecies actors and intelligences in urban-making, while also emphasizing the necessity of acknowledging the complexities and uncertainties of this process. Further inspired by the insights of recent urban scholarship, such as smart and AI urbanisms, the article discusses the essential role of technology, engineering, AI, and machine in building democratic cities. By examining the efforts and collaborations between these multifaceted characters, the novel challenges market-driven anthropocentric notions of urbanism and envisions a future where multispecies communities use technology and great care to build equitable and viable posturban landscapes.Öğe Possible Language Teacher Selves and Their Contribution to Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety: A Study Over English Language Teaching and English Language and Literature Departments(Afyon Kocatepe Üniversitesi, 2024) Vural, HaldunEven in one's native language, speaking in front of others might be difficult. Therefore, it may be said that if teachers are aware of the reasons for their students’ English-speaking anxiety, they can choose the best teaching strategies and techniques to use in their lessons. The current study's objective is to determine whether students in the English Language Teaching (ELT) and English Language and Literature (ELL) departments have significantly different degrees of anxiety when speaking in a foreign language.; to investigate the degree and type of relations between these FLSA variables of two departments; and to find out how much FLSA the students have and whether their level of apprehension when speaking a foreign language varies depending on the departments they are in. The study has the features of quantitative research design. Data are collected from fourth-year students in the departments of English Language Teaching and English Language and Literature. The results demonstrate that there is a substantial difference between ELL and ELT students' levels of anxiety while speaking English.Öğe A Brief History of Assessment Approaches in Translation(MANAS Üniversitesi, 2024) Vural, HaldunThe goal of obtaining translation competency in translation education necessitates awareness of the entire process, from the generation of the source text to the assessment of the target text. Since the variety of the translation action necessitates a multidimensional assessment, this awareness is achieved by integrating the flexible and varied nature of translation with the field-based perspective. Within the context of literary texts and non-literary texts, the concretization of these characteristics in translation education is crucial. Different languages and civilizations can be translated into one another. Target texts are therefore assessed in various contexts, either directly or indirectly. The notion of assessment is, however, extremely broad. This can occasionally result in uncertainty and complication. Translation assessment ideas that are relevant to this diversity and inclusivity are also reflected in the act of translation. This study aims to track the translation of assessment and criticism notions. The multi-layered character of criticism and evaluation concepts is highlighted in this study as it examines terms like review, quality evaluation, criticism, and measurement assessment within the framework of theoretical viewpoints based on text type classifications.Öğe Bridging Cultures: A Critical Examination of Translation Assessment(2024) Vural, HaldunThe process that enables cultures to learn about one another is a different definition of translation. In addition to serving as a tool for communication, language also serves as a conduit for the cultural heritage of communities. This study aims to explore the role that translation evaluation methodologies play in the field of translation studies, as well as how they are defined and applied in relation to assessment concepts and criticism. The importance of language as a medium for cultural legacies is emphasized by this study, which investigates the mechanism by which civilizations can learn about one another via translation. Translating an expression from the source language into the target text as closely as possible is known as equivalency, and it is studied in a variety of contexts and historical periods. With an emphasis on the semantic domains of concepts for translation assessment, the study analyzes theoretical approaches that impact translation criticism and assessment. Assessments of the use, acceptability, and fulfillment of translations are made in relation to the intended audience as well as the translators themselves. Based on the need for efficient communication, the study emphasizes the fundamental role that assessment plays in translation. It indicates that theoretical translation expertise forms the basis of the quality assessment expression employed in the field. In addition to offering definitions and application insights into translation studies, the investigation explains the nuances of translation assessment methodologies. Theoretical techniques and principles of translation assessment are also indicated.Öğe “Instead of Pumping Iron, She was Pumping Bullets into her Husband”: The Portrayal of a Female Perpetrator in Nanette Burstein’s Killer Sally”([Inter]sections, 2023) Bay, HaticeIn the media, the law, and the public opinion, women who resort to violence within abusive relationships are often depicted as either victims or monsters. Nanette Burstein’s threepart docuseries, Killer Sally (2022), reexamines this binary which focuses on Sally McNeil, a former professional bodybuilder who murdered her husband, also a professional bodybuilder, in Southern California in 1995. Drawing from research and analyses found in Belinda Morrissey’s When Women Kill and The Routledge International Handbook of Perpetrator Studies, this article argues that Burstein questions the discursive, performative, and one-sided dimensions of media and legal portrayals of female perpetrators. By placing both the perpetrator and the victim within complex socio-psychological and posthuman frameworks, Burstein broadens the discourse on battered women who kill by granting the perpetrator agency and voice.Öğe Iranian EFL Students’ Perceptions of Foreign Language Writing Anxiety and Perfectionism in Essay Writing(Journal of English Language Teaching and Linguistics, 2023) Khezerlou, EbrahimMastering the writing skill is an important criterion for EFL students who desire to fully invest in their academic discipline. While it is essential to develop numerous writing abilities to communicate effectively, the research shows that the affective variables, such as self-esteem, perfectionism, stress, anxiety, and burnout exert a deep negative influence both on the process and product of writing. To explore the devastating effects of these constructs beyond, the study aims to investigate the interactive impact of anxiety and perfectionism on essay writing among the Iranian EFL students (n=85). The Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory of Cheng (2004) and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale of Hewitt and Flett (1990) were employed to measure the participants’ perceived writing anxiety and perfectionism. The results proved moderate levels of FLWA and perfectionism among the participants. They also revealed that the most prevalent type of anxiety and perfectionism among them were cognitive and self-oriented, respectively. Finally, the results revealed a strong positive relationship between their anxiety and perfectionistic tendencies. Thus, it was concluded that anxiety and perfectionism may interactively challenge EFL students more in their writing activities. The results are beneficial in deepening the understandings of teachers and researchers in the field pedagogically and practically.Öğe Strategies for translating Turkish, English and French animal proverbs: Comparative study(Amur State University, 2023) Vural, HaldunEach language contains distinctive properties that are a part of its culture. Throughout history there has been a constant interest in designing and collecting proverbs, as far as they are reflective of both cultural resemblances and dissimilarities. Culture- and language-specific proverbs frequently cannot be translated into the target language literally, although, it can be assumed that their messages can be transferred to be adequately comprehended in the target language. The current study examines the proverbs that are equivalent in context in Turkish, English and French where at least one of them is animal-related. It looks into the techniques used in translating these proverbs among the three languages. Two of the five Mona Baker's strategies were applied to the analyzed material: (i) similarity both in meaning and form, (ii) similarity in meaning and dissimilarity in form. As a result, among 18 groups of proverbs selected for analysis (each including Turkish, English and French equivalents and 2 literal translation – Turkish-to-English and French-to-English), 5 demonstrated equivalence of form, context and meaning with the same animal nominations. Among the 13 groups, 9 showed higher equivalence between English and French proverbs, 3 – between Turkish and French proverbs and only 1 – between Turkish and English proverbs. The reason why one or two languages of the three have an animal nomination in a proverb while the other(s) does/do not have any may be traditional, religious, geographical or historical differences.Öğe Mentoring and its Significance in the Formation of Translators' Self-Efficacy Perceptions(Participatory Educational Research, 2023) Vural, HaldunSelf-efficacy is defined as the confidence in one's talents and capacity to carry out the tasks assigned to them as well as to address and resolve the issues in their personal and professional lives. On the other hand, the word ‘mentor’ is assumed to have roots in Greek mythology. The term "mentoring" refers to a caring, sharing, and supportive relationship in which one person invests time, knowledge, and effort into promoting the development of another person's skills, abilities, and knowledge. In this study, the role of mentoring in the formation of translator candidates' self-efficacy perception is examined. This study employs a qualitative research methodology to ascertain the translator candidates' opinions on the mentoring practice in the development of their perception of self-efficacy in their workplaces. In the findings, translator candidates state that practical training is important for them to gain self-efficacy in the field of profession. The results indicate that participants’ professional experience is insufficient, they see themselves inadequate in the fields of application and they need mentor help in terms of methods to be used, self-confidence and guidance. They emphasize the value of mentoring in terms of obtaining personal and professional experience and share favourable views on this practice. The results show that the translation candidates' self-efficacy perspective is poor, but the mentoring practice may be helpful in gaining professional experience and developing a self-efficacy perception.Öğe ESKİ TÜRK VE KORE-JEJU MEZAR HEYKELLERİ ÜZERİNE ŞAMANİSTİK BİR YORUMLAMA(Geleneksel Yayıncılık, 2023) Okutan Davletov, Nükhet; Jang, JuyeongAltay Şamanizminde mühim bir rol oynayan ve esasında eski ölüye tapınma ile ilişkili olan ata-lar kültü, hem Güney Sibirya’da hem de Kore yarımadasında güçlü bir biçimde yaşatılmakta ve bu külte dair uygulamalar tarihte ve günümüzde önemli benzerlikler taşımaktadır. Özellikle cenaze ve anma törenlerinde ölünün mezarının, mezar heykelinin ya da tasvirinin kanlı veya kansız kurbanlar sunularak beslenmesi yoluyla ruhun teskin edilmesi uygulaması, geçmişte olduğu gibi içinde bulunu-lan XXI. yüzyılda da Şamanizmi yaşatan Koreliler ve Sibirya Türkleri arasında hâlâ sürdürülmekte-dir. Bu sebeple eski Türk ve Kore-Jeju mezar heykellerinin tarihlendirilmesi ve esas yapılış amaçları farklı olsa da bu çalışmada her iki heykel grubu Şamanik atalar kültü içerisinde yorumlanmıştır. Jeju Adası’ndaki mezar heykelleri sıklıkla taşıdıkları nesnelere ya da ellerinin konumuna göre sınıflandı-rılmaktadır. Örneğin eller çaprazlanmışsa bu heykelin mezarı koruyucu işlev gördüğünü gösterirken, eller nazikçe birleştirilmişse bu heykelin ölüye hizmet etmek için orada olduğu anlamını taşımaktadır. Eğer heykel elinde bir yelpaze ya da fırça tutuyorsa bunun Konfüçyüsçülüğün bir etkisi olduğu, kılıç, mızrak ya da yarasa taşıyorsa mezarı koruduğu; elinde mektup varsa bunun da torunlarının geleceği için temennilerde bulunan merhumun düşüncelerinin bir yansıması olduğu ifade edilmektedir. Fakat heykellerin elinde kuş, yılan ya da balık gibi hayvanlar da olabilmektedir ve bu motifler Kore halkı-nın en eski inancı olan Şamanizm kaynaklı görülüp birer totem olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Heykel-lerin kaşık, şarap kadehi ya da şarap şişesi taşırken tasvir edildikleri de tespit edilmiştir. Bunlar ise tartışmasız doğrudan ölen kişinin ruhunun beslenmesi uygulamasını göstermektedir. Ancak Kore’de çeşitli araştırmacılar ölüye öbür tarafta hizmet edecek insanları temsil eden Jeju Adası mezar heykel-lerini Şamanizm yerine Konfüçyüsçülüğün ön planda olduğu Orta Joseon Dönemi’nde yapılmış oldukları için tamamen bu inanç sistemi ile yorumlamaktadırlar. Bu çalışmada ise Jeju Adası heykel-leri ile eski Türk mezar heykellerinin elinde ölünün beslenmesi amacıyla kadeh ya da kâse şeklinde nesnelerin tasvir edilmiş olmasının Şamanik bir ortaklık olduğu görüşüne varılmıştır. Eski Türkler ve Koreliler arasında mezar heykelleri aracılığıyla ölünün beslenmesi uygulamasının kaynağı olarak arkeoloji ve etnografya verilerine göre sahip olduğu en az 40.000 yıllık geçmişle Konfüçyüsçülük ya da Budizmden daha eski bir inanç sistemi olan Şamanizmin gösterilmesi, metodolojik olarak daha uygun görülmüştür. Bu doğrultuda Kore'deki birçok dini hareketi veya sosyal fenomeni anlamanın en iyi yollarından birinin Şamanizmi anlamak olduğunu belirten bilimcilerin ifadelerinden yola çıkıla-rak yarımadada Budizmin ve Konfüçyüsçülüğün Şamanizmden etkilenmiş olduğu ortaya koyulmaya çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca Jeju mezar heykellerinin de içinde bulunduğu anıt ve totemlerin temelde Şamanik birer kült nesnesi olması, atalar kültü dâhilinde cenaze uygulamalarına hizmet etmeleri dışında farklı dinlerden kişi ve kuruluşların tutumlarıyla da açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır.Öğe Note-Producing and Note-Reading Patterns of Turkish Students in Consecutive Interpreting(2023) Khezerlou, EbrahimConsecutive interpreting (CI) is a mode of verbal translation between a source and target language (TL) which “involves listening to what someone has to say and then, when they have finished speaking, reproducing the same message in another language” (Gillies, 2017, p. 5). Note taking, a fundamental skill in the process of long CI, refers to the activity of jotting down a speech in a highly individualised style and then recreating the original speech by the help of a combination of notes, memory, and general knowledge (Albl-Mikasa, 2008; Gillies 2017). To better understand the CI proficiency of the students in the context of Turkey, the study examined the idea-identifying, note-producing, and note-reading patterns of 26 undergraduate students majoring in English Language Translation and Interpreting. The data for the study were obtained from the papers of three official exams: a midterm, a quiz, and a final exam. In analysing data, the identified test items were divided into their composing components and were assigned one score for each. Then, their total scores were calculated as a hypothesized value (In task one: midterm= 12 and final= 12, in task two: midterm= 38 and final= 49, and in task three: midterm= 23 and final= 48). Next, students’ responses to test items in idea-identifying, note-producing, and note-reading tasks were computed to obtain their true scores. Finally, their performance results were statistically analysed to answer the research questions. The results revealed a preference for the use of word note form over the other ones among the students. They also confirmed a better idea-identifying, note-producing, and note-reading performance among the high-level students. Moreover, it was found that note-reading patterns of the students were better than their note-producing ones. The findings of the study are pedagogically and practically useful for teachers and practitioners in the field.Öğe A Proposed Rubric for Assessing Student Performance in Sight Translation(2023) Khezerlou, EbrahimRubrics are scoring tools used to assess student performance based upon a specific set of criteria. They enable instructors to provide a more accurate, unbiased and consistent scoring, and they can, on the other hand, give students a clear sense of the expectations in a given assignment or task. It has been observed that the assessment of students’ abilities in the sight translation course offered in the English Language Translation and Interpreting departments of Turkish universities is not enough efficient and consistent. So, the goal of the present study is to establish a simple, reliable and effective rubric for assessing the undergraduate students’ nonverbal and verbal communicative skills when they read a written text in English and then translate it orally into their mother tongue (Turkish). While using the validity model of Lawshe (1975), the content validity of the proposed rubric in a triple period was tested by 5 experts in the first trial, 8 ones in the second trial and 10 ones in the third trial. The interrater reliability of the tool was also substantiated in the assessment of the recorded performance of eighteen students by three ratters. The results disclosed the highest content validity ratio for the nonverbal criterion of Eye Contact and the lowest for the verbal criterion of Enthusiasm.Öğe "Urban rhythmanalysis in Mahsa Mohebali’s In Case of Emergency"(H-ermes. Journal of Communication, 2023) Bay, HaticeIn this essay, the focus is on Mahsa Mohebali’s novel In Case of Emergency, which provides a powerful portrayal of the lives of women and the youth in Tehran, under a regime that represses its citizens. Through the lens of Henri Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis, this essay examines how Mohebali portrays the unpredictable, deviant, and playful nature of city spaces. The protagonist, Shadi, disrupts the controlled, surveilled, and oppressed city by producing her own arrhythmic patterns. Mohebali’s depiction of Tehran as a character itself highlights its polyrhythmic nature, which encompasses eurhythmic, isorhythmic, and arrhythmic spaces all at once. This portrayal challenges the authority’s grip over the lives and experiences of its citizens, and reveals a more nuanced and complex city. Despite the regime’s attempts to suppress individuality and restrict citizens’ lives, the novel presents a world where the unpredictable and deviant still exist, albeit in the hidden corners of the city. In portraying a trembling and earthquake-hit Tehran as another protagonist, Mohebali succeeds in offering a glimpse of a more multifaceted Tehran that is crisscrossed by and composed of a multitude of rhythms.Öğe Indigenerdity and STEM in Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley(POPMEC RESEARCH BLOG THE US REPRESENTATION IN POPULAR MEDIA AND CULTURE, 2023) Bay, HaticeNative Americans also have their own nerds who contribute to and challenge mainstream geek and STEM culture. The purpose of this essay is to explore how Indigenous authors, like Angeline Boulley, contribute to the decolonization of the STEM fields. In her novel Firekeeper’s Daughter (2021), Boulley presents a young, female Ojibwe character who disrupts the White male-dominated culture of science and challenges gender-stereotyped portrayals of young women in STEM. By drawing from her ancestral traditions and her knowledge of nerd culture, the protagonist defies expectations. This essay examines Boulley’s efforts to decolonize the STEM fields, critique the prevailing culture of science (which is predominantly male and White), and challenge gender-stereotyped images of young female STEM characters. Ultimately, it shows that Firekeeper’s Daughter diversifies the concept of STEM by reshaping the self-perception of Indigenous people and challenging external perceptions of them.Öğe The Unreliable Narrator’s Deconstruction of the Illness Narrative in Lauren Slater’s Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir(Türkiye Amerikan Etüdleri Derneği, 2022) Pekanık, AylinWithin the larger scope of life narratives, illness narratives occupy a significant space both as honest expressions of often silenced, marginalized experiences and medically important accounts of how illnesses manifest in individuals. However, their sensitive nature necessitates that they are subjected to the overwhelming expectations of authenticity, evidence, and agency in order to be seen as legitimate. Lauren Slater’s illness memoir Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir (2000) challenges these expectations by constructing its narrative through lies, metaphors, and an apparent dismissal of the conventional autobiographical pact. This approach acts as a deconstruction of both the expectations of life narratives and how they specifically manifest in the perception of illness narratives. As Slater makes a different pact that prioritizes emotional truth over factual events, she asserts her agency and presents an authentic, candid, and multifaceted account of chronic illness that refuses to offer a conventional, digestible, marketable story of triumph against adversity.Öğe Sitcoms and EFL Learners’ Foreign Language Anxiety and Motivation for Learning(Australian International Academic Centre PTY.LTD., 2022) Valizadeh, MohammadrezaThe use of movies in EFL classes has attracted the attention of researchers interested in this area. The use of sitcoms, as a type of audio-visual material, for language learning has been studied but not extensively. This study examined the effect of sitcoms on EFL learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) and motivation for learning. A pretest/posttest experimental research design was used to collect the participants’ scores on motivation and FLA scales before and after the treatment. Two intact groups, each consisting of 35 language learners, who were evaluated as pre-intermediate language learners based on the language institute’s assessment standards, were selected and assigned to different conditions. FLA instrument and Foreign Language Learning Motivation Questionnaire (FLLMQ) were used to collect the data. The learners’ scores on the two scales and their components were estimated through running independent samples t-tests and Cohen’s test. The results revealed that watching sitcoms significantly affected the EFL learners’ motivation for learning. Sitcoms also decreased learners’ FLA and test anxiety. The use of sitcoms in the classroom is also feasible and practical in multimedia settings. Language learners can laugh and have fun while watching the videos. In order to prepare language learners for listening and speaking lessons, teachers are encouraged to offer sitcoms. The findings can be theoretically and practically used by language teachers.Öğe The Effect of Individual/Group Focused vs Unfocused Feedback on EFL Learners’ Pragmatic Performance in Terms of Accuracy and Fluency(St. Theresa Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2022) Valizadeh, MohammadrezaThis research investigated the feasible effects of individual/group focused versus unfocused feedback on EFL learners’ pragmatics achievements in terms of accuracy and fluency. To do this, 60 female intermediate level English students were divided into four experimental groups and asked to write request letter based on the instruction they had received. In order to check the homogeneity of the participants in terms of their level of proficiency, an Oxford Placement Test was administered. Afterwards, to estimate the participants’ speech act performance before the experiment in each group, a pre-test was used. During treatment sessions, the writings were corrected, individual/group focused and unfocused feedbacks were provided, and then they were handed back to the students to notice the errors. To assess the pragmatic knowledge of the participants regarding the speech act of request in each group after the treatment, a post-test was administered. To reach more reliable data, two raters corrected the participants’ responses on pretest and posttest. Two repeated-measures two-way ANOVA and MANOVA were used to analyse the data. The results indicated individual/group focused and unfocused group significantly benefited from the provision of feedback. Besides, implications of the findings and suggestions for further research are both addressed at the end of the thesis.Öğe Video-accompanied vs. handout-accompanied assignments: Effects on EFL learners’ descriptive paragraphs(RumeliDE Journal of Language and Literature Studies, 2021) Valizadeh, MohammadrezaThis study compared the effects of videos and handouts, accompanied by the paragraph assignments, on the quality of English language learners’ written descriptive paragraphs. The study was quasiexperimental and quantitative. It had a pretest-treatment-posttest design. As the treatments, either videos or handouts were accompanied by descriptive paragraph assignments which the participating students were required to write. The purpose of accompanying either videos or handouts was providing the learners with additional guides to help them write appropriate and accurate descriptive paragraphs. The study was conducted during the Covid-19 crisis. The participants were 56 Turkish learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at pre-intermediate level of proficiency. They were receiving virtual education due to school closures because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants were assigned to two groups, each of which included 28 learners. One group was provided with educational videos, relevant to the given assignment. The other group was given similar information via handouts. The results of the independent samples t-test indicated that the group that received videos significantly outperformed the one that received handouts. Consequently, the study highly recommends EFL teachers utilize this technique in their classrooms.Öğe Language teachers’ perceptions of using Google keyboard in L2 writing(Journal of Educational Technology & Online Learning, 2022) Valizadeh, MohammadrezaDespite the growth of research on mobile technologies in educational contexts, research on language teachers’ perceptions of mobile technologies – particularly in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) – remains sparse. Hence, the present study explored EFL teachers’ perceptions of using Google keyboard (Gboard) for L2 writing instruction. The participants were two teachers who taught 47 intermediate Turkish EFL learners. Data were collected from the teachers. They were asked to keep a teaching journal and report their perceptions of Gboard implementation as well as the most distinctive lexical errors they deemed to emerge in the learners’ writing. Data analyses indicated that the teachers perceived the integration of Gboard into instruction as an effective intervention that assisted with enhancing the spelling accuracy of the learners. In order to facilitate learning vocabulary items in English by language learners, mobile assisted vocabulary learning attracted considerable attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the application of mobile devices for learning the most frequently used vocabulary items in core vocabulary lists received far less attention. To address this gap, the current study investigated the contribution of a digital flashcard application (i.e. NGSL builder) designed for smartphone devices in out-of-the-classroom learning of essential vocabulary in English among EFL learners. The participants were 86 university students in experimental and control groups. In addition to formal language education during a semester, the experimental group used the mobile application for studying vocabulary items outside the classroom, while the control group used traditional materials (i.e. word list) to study the same content. The participants’ vocabulary knowledge was measured in three times (pre, post, and delayed posttest), and the results revealed that the use of mobile applications contributed significantly to vocabulary knowledge development, and those in the experimental group outperformed their counterparts in the control group. The findings also provided empirical evidence for the long-term impacts of mobile-assisted vocabulary learning. The study highlights the significance of mobile technologies in helping L2 learners to acquire essential vocabulary in English and discusses the pedagogical implications of these findings.
