This chapter intends to focus on the correlation between the historical and theoretical construction of national and racial-based imagineries of natural entities –forests in this case- based on sentience. To this end, firstly, the historical roots of German forest perception is discussed. Secondly, major political and economic developments, figures, arguments, and conceptualizations are analyzed to reveal the process of building a national identity through sentient landscape. Then, the chapter focuses on the practical dimension, from Völkisch nationalism and Blood and Soil to Nazi policies and Dauerwald. By doing these, this chapter aims to disclose how the sentient bridge between German forests and xenophobia is constructed both in theory and political practice which can be quite fruitful to better analyze contemporary challenges such as rising far right and neo-fascist discourses.
