    Applied strategies in translating idiomatic expressions: Cultural-bound analysis in Brida novel by Paulo Coelho

    The main purpose of this paper is to throw some light on applied strategies at an idiomatic expressional level in a contrastive analysis framework by investigating the cultural-bound in Brida novel by Paulo Coelho from English translation into Persian. It is worthy to point out that the main theoretical framework of the present paper is based on Baker’s (2011) model of translation in rendering idiomatic expressions. Further, within the text, there are some certain comparisons which are conducted to highlight the matches and mismatches in translation of idiomatic expressions both in English language and the Persian one. Hence, the core properties of this issue are described both in English and Persian. In addition, other researchers, translators, teachers and students may well take this information into account as one of the main platforms from which they find out some strategies in translation of idiomatic expressions. Moreover, to make the comparison clear any strategy has been classified and exemplified by the researchers. The result indicates the fact that Idiomatic expression of similar meaning but dissimilar form at 32.48% is the most applicable strategies in translating idiomatic expressions when a translator faces cultural-bound obstacles.

    Non-Equivalence at Idiomatic and Expressional Level and the Strategies to Deal With: English Translation into Persian in Animal Farm by George Orwell

    This paper makes an effort to investigate the obstacles in nonequivalence at the idiomatic and expressional level and then presents some certain factors to face with such difficulties in Animal Farm novel (1945) by George Orwell and its translation by Amir Amirshahi (1969). The researchers in the current study tries by analyze six certain strategies as using an idiomatic expression of similar meaning and form, similar meaning but dissimilar form, borrowing the source language, translation by paraphrase, translation by omission of a play on idiomatic expression and translation by omission of entire idiomatic expression (Baker, 2011). Moreover, the present research is a descriptive, non-judgmental, comparative and corpus-based analysis of English-Persian parallel study. The findings demonstrate the fact that the practical ways in translation of idiomatic expressions which presented by Baker (2011) are applicable, and the most useable strategy is using an idiomatic expression of similar meaning but dissimilar form at 35.96%.

    THE EFFECT OF IDEOLOGY ON TRANSLATION: ENGLISH TRANSLATION INTO PERSIAN IN DEATH OF A SALESMAN PLAY BY ARTHUR MILLER

    The main aims of the study are to work out the framework of consciousness and unconsciousness aspects of ideology and their effects on translation. For applying the aforementioned items, the researchers put Death of a Salesman (1949) play by Arthur Miller and its translation by Ali Asghar Bahram Beigi (1984) under scrutiny. Furthermore, the present paper makes an effort to analyze sensory experience, practical, reflective and reflexive aspects at the consciousness level of ideology. This study is a corpus-based, comparative, descriptive and non-judgmental analysis of the English-Persian parallel corpus. The obtained result proved the fact that awareness rising in these two major aspects of ideology for the analysis of the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) help translators to choose the closest equivalence in the social and situational context of the ST and the TT. Moreover, statistical results indicate that the most frequent aspect of ideology is at the consciousness level with 81%.
